Pierre Calame a été pendant vingt ans haut fonctionnaire dans différentes positions dans les secteurs de l'urbanisme, de la planification urbaine, du logement et de la coopération internationale. En 1985, il a été nommé Secrétaire Général d'Usinor, groupe industriel de la sidérurgie.

De 1988 à 2009, il a été le Directeur Général de la Fondation Charles Léopold Mayer pour le Progrès de l'Homme, ayant son siège en Suisse, fondation internationale, qui se consacre à la mobilisation des connaissances et expériences pour faire face aux défis majeurs de la prochaine décennie. Il a pris la présidence du Conseil de Fondation en janvier 2010.

Membre fondateur de l'Alliance pour un monde responsable, pluriel et solidaire, processus international qui rassemble des personnes et des associations prêts à travailler ensemble sur la mise en oeuvre de solutions pour faire face aux principaux défis du 21ème siècle, il a organisé, en 2001, l'Assemblée Mondiale de Citoyens qui a conduit les participants à écrire la «Charte des responsabilités humaines".

Co-fondateur du Forum China-Europa, www.china-europa-forum.net, il a travaillé au développement du dialogue entre les sociétés chinoise et européenne, prototype de ce que pourrait être, dans l'avenir, le dialogue de société à société entre les autres parties du monde.

Ses écrits sur la grande transition ses dimensions et ses leviers, la révolution de la gouvernance, la place des territoires dans un système mondialisé, le renouveau de la démocratie, les méthodes d'intelligence collective, le passage de l'économie à "l'eoconomie" (le bien être de tous dans le respects des limites de la biosphère), l'idée de contrat social, les nouvelles régulations mondiales, l'émergence d'une société civile mondiale le conduisent à intervenir fréquemment dans différents continents.

Pierre Calame was a senior civil servant for twenty years and held various posts in urban planning, housing and international cooperation. In 1985, he was appointed Secretary General of the iron and steel industry group Usinor.

From 1988 to 2009, he was director Charles Leopold Mayer Foundation for the Progress of Humankind, an independent Swiss foundation devoted to mobilizing knowledge and experiences to face the major challenges of our times. He became chair of the Foundation’s board of trustees in January 2010.

As founding member of the Alliance for a Responsible, Plural and United World, an international process bringing together persons and organizations prepared to work together on implementing solutions to face the main challenges of the twenty-first century, he organized in 2001 the World Citizens Assembly, one of the outcomes of which was the drafting by its participants of the Charter of Human Responsibilities.

As member of the Founding Committee of the China-Europa Forum he has been working on developing dialogue between Chinese and European societies, a prototype of what could, in the future, be a society-to-society dialogue in other parts of the world.

Based on his writings on the great transition, its dimensions and its levers, the governance revolution, the importance of territories in a globalized system, the revival of democracy, collective-intelligence methods, transitioning from the economy to the “œconomy” (the wellbeing of all within the limits of the biosphere), the idea of a social contract, new global regulations, the emergence of a global civil society, he has frequently been asked to speak in various continents.
